Muggsy Malone – The Parkway Kid

They say, that motivation is the key to success in life. Its is your will to want to be. The part of your character that defines you in the most crucial moments. Your second wind. Your drive. Your desire to win. Its what you have when you have nothing else in this world to fall back on when you wont give in. Thats the first letter in the beginning of this young DMV artists name known as Muggsy Malone who is slowly bubbling to become one of hip-hop’s future hall of famers in my opinion. He posses things that are missing from the melting pot we call hip-hop today. Skills, talent and a wantingness to do more than your average MC. His business ventures on the independent tip are growing as fast as these rappers use autotune. In an exclusive interview with mixxbosses.com, he sits down and answers some questions, and talks to us about his upcoming release with DJ Panic and DJ Heat called  TPK. Read below

muggs21. Muggsy, Where you from and how did you get started?I’m from DC. Born in PG County. Been back and forth between MD and DC for my whole life except when i went to North Carolina for school ever since I was a youngin and my life, times and family encompasses this area as well as other places that i’ve been.I’ve been traveling and living in DC/MD area since i was a child. Thats where The Parkway Kid or TPK comes in.The I got started rapping in DC with my cousin Fats back in the late 80’s when i wasnt even a teenager at the time and eventually became a part of the group Product Of The Streets. It was a way to cope with a lot of things that were going on around me and it just stuck with a brother and i got addicted. Pressin fast forward, I got noticed by The Hometeam Flex And Rayne on WPGC 95.5 for a song I wrote called Be Alright that got played on Myspace Mondays and ever since then its been on.
2. How did you get the name Muggsy Malone?
Motivation U Gain Grinding Surviving Yesterday. That basically embodies the type of person i am inside and out and something that I feel everyone and they’re mother has. I’m not one to give up, at all. Easily ain’t even included. Malone stands for Me Alone cause I was mostly solo in a lot of situations i faced. I didn’t have people that I could call on with the snap of a finger for help and i had to help my self. I learned very early about self-reliance. Even tho I could have hit this guy or whoever, a man comes up on his own and makes it happen on his own merit. Some guys depend on people all day. I dont got no time for it. I try to do as much on my own as i possibly can and lookout for the cookout if i can. Nobody ever gave me my name. I made my own
3. Whats your favorite song and why?
I got too many of those man. I listen to everybody. Right now i guess my favorite song is ‘Be Alright’ cause thats the song that got me to where i am today. It’ll always be my favorite. I got a lot of songs that are my favorite outside of my own stuff man. I listen to a lot of music in general that I find myself in a whole lot at times. Like i just love good music. I admit I don’t like everything and a person may not like mine but thats life. Some things you just cant hate on. Like an amatuer on apollo singing a gospel song. Some shit is just fucked up at times what people say and sometimes its the truth, but its a matter of opinon at the end of the day.
4. Who are your biggest influences?
Anybody who’s in the category of an tough lyricist or songwriter man. The people that moved me the most were Scarface, Jay-Z , Biggie , Tupac , Big L , Big Pun , Canibus , Devin The Dude , Question Mark Asylum , Ice Cube , Snoop , Outkast , Wu Tang , Redman u name em i prolly had they’re CD at one point in time. A lot of jazz and old school too from Gil Scott Heron , BB King , Michael Jackson , Marvin Gaye , Stevie Wonder , Al Green , Michael Franks , Bill Withers , Grover Washington Jr , Curtis Mayfield i mean the list goes on and on. I was raised in a household where go-go , and jazz were the main focus. As soon as rap found me is was a rap literally. I was hooked. I’m sure i forgot a whole lot of great musicians but those are the ones that stick out the most right now in my mind.
5. Michael Jordan dont rap. He’s a basketball player, how does he relate to you.

I know (laugh) the reason why I said Michael Jordan was because Jordan was a consistent player who worked his team to the bone. I was always a MJ fan but when I went down south and had to studied him in school I became an addict of him. I read his book Hang Time. You know this man, practiced every damn day. Shooting free throws and perfecting his jumper even though he was already the best. I mean this is the greatest of all time here, the guy you bet your money on in the finals and there’s a chance you knew you were gonna double up at the end of the series. And even he hit the gym every day off season or on. Cause he’s HUMAN. You gotta respect that. I take rap the same way, like its a proffessional sport in a sense and if YOU dont stay sharp you make others feel dull about you. Real talk. you gotta excersize everyday.
5. Who have you worked with?
So far everyone that i worked with is cool as a fan. Lyriciss, Proverb, Mo-Betta from Topp Dogg Hill, Product Of the Streets thats the group im a part of, Playboye Cassanova, 32 from Spynehitaz, Nonya, K-Beta, XO, Doe Cigapom, Owners Illustrated Magazine, Lady Venom, J-Scrilla, Judah, Team Demo, 95 Connect ,  Best Kept Secret, Killa Cal, Dayo, E, Mo Millions, Mo Chips, Bad Abbot, Laelo Hood, Amadeus,Conrad Dimanche, Solomon, Infamous who won a grammy for the Carter 3, Cheri Dennis from Bad Boy, Shannon Jones from Bad Boy,The Tek, Kajmir Royale, Chemist, Streetrunner who won a grammy for Carter 3 as well, Ra Charm, The Academy and I’m sure i’m leaving out some more. I opened up a show for Immortal Tech at University Of MD. He was one of the first people to reach out to me as far from a major artist standpoint when no one else. He leaves no stoned unturned when it comes  Shoutout to his Rebel Arms team. What else is there, ummmm, oh yeah i did a cypher with Mad Skillz in Baltimore on the radio.

6. Immortal Technique is a beast of a lyricist and a helluva business man from what i heard and so is Skillz. How was he when you met him?

Real recognizes real evevrywhere you go. I learned a lot from watching homie in one day that i’ll take with me for the rest of my career. He does a lot of good things in the world like setting up schools and orphanages and schools for kids in Afghanastan and probably doing more positive things for his hometown of Harlem.  I got nothing but love for the brother just like anybody else i meet on the street or at a show man. I aint with all the gimmicky , Hollywood, lets portray and image type shit. Just be you and people will respect you more at the end of the day. Skills is the same way. It was my first time spitting on the radio and to spit with Skills on my first one was an honor. I didn’t even expect it, when i got there it was like, oh shit! I’m about to be rapping with this nigga, aww man.

8. What do you think about Wale and what he’s doing for your area. He’s signed to RocNation with Jay-Z and Interscope and has an album coming out and represents your area.

I’m glad for him. I dont know him personally, some good friends of mine that i grew up with do and I’ve met him on a couple of occasions and he aight dude. He’s putting on for the DMV and at the end of the day thats what its about. I seen him out Largo at a lil meeting that took place out there. I wish main man nothing but the best in his career and everything he does cause everybody trying to eat right now. Shoutout to Tabi and Proverb. They just came off of the Rock The Bells tour. These are folks that I’ve actually shook hands with like men are supposed to and i give credit where credit is rightfully due. Shoutout to Don Juan cause he just gotta deal with Jive as well.

9. What can you tell us about the DC music scene that you dont think people know?

We gotta strong team coming out of the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Me and the squad been putting it down for a longtime. There’s a lot of us man. Make sure ya’ll check us all out. We been on the scene doing on the musical forefront from Jazz, R&B to Go-Go and Rap for a long time. I think that they’re was a black cloud over the area in general when it came to Rap. R&B always thrived as well as Go-Go, but rap never broke the mold as much as it is now. There’s a lot that i could speak on keepin it real, but I’m not gonna perpetuate the negatives as far as that goes. I just hope we all can work it out and that goes for me too cause I got my issues with certain people and nobody is perfect

10. Do you have a single? If so what is it?

I dont have a definite one as of yet. I’m not going let the cat outta the bag just yet, but there’s a couple joints i’m releasing to the streets real soon. Somewhere To Be At is already out there heavy and a lot of people have loved it in the city and overseas. Allhiphop.com was loving the joint. Theres a lot of songs out the internet that they feeling on different websites too so google my name and check me out.

9. Any other upcoming projects you want to tell us about?

There’s a rack of things that i’m working on or trying to complete at the moment. TPK is gonna be official and i’m hoping to have some big days in the city coming soon to celebrate for it cause I’m finally releasing a mixtape. Ya’ll dont know how long its been. Shoutout to Panic and Heat. Make sure ya’ll check out her Mumbo Sauce mixtape series and peep out DJ Panic’s mixtapes. Most are on that datpiff.com joint so yeah do that. Make sure ya’ll check out J-Scrilla’s Guns And Butter project dropping on Inner Loop Records. He got everybody and they mother on the joint and i’m on it with a song called “Chillin Like A Villian” featuing K-Beta, Lyriciss and Proverb
